Characteristics of Springs for Garage Doors
I would like to share information about the types of springs. Springs for garage doors come in different sizes. They differ in length in inches, pond thickness, and internal diameter. If we are changing springs in Residential doors, then springs with a diameter of 2 inches are best suited for this job. This diameter is best suited for Residential doors and will serve you for a long time. You can also consider a diameter of 2/5.8, but you can order this size from Garage Door Supply, where most likely you will need to open a personal account. But for example, we will consider the diameter of the springs 2 inches. It is very important to note that the length of the ponds and the springs in general affect the continued functionality of your garage door. The longer the spring, the longer it will last you. Therefore, when buying springs, first of all check the length of the springs, which of course should work in the balance of your doors, you cannot just buy long springs, but you should pay attention to the old springs that fit you correctly, this will be your hint. Below I will describe the entire process you need to purchase the correct springs.
The thickness of the rod on the spring is also important – this is the basis of a proper spring. The rod comes in different sizes (About 20 sizes). So I want to explain how you can determine the correct spring thickness. Firstly, you need to check on the side of the spring there are special labels that show (manufacturer, size of the section and the entire door). If you see a label with companies (CHI, Ammar, Clopay, Doorlink, ASAP), then you can use our article to replace your garage door. Basically, garage doors for 2 cars are standard size 16/7f.

Sizes of garage door springs in some categories
We will look at the example of doors of sizes 16/7.
Also unforgettable is to look at the label on the side of the door. (CHI, Ammar, Clopay, Doorlink, ASAP companies) if we see one of these labels, then we use the springs described below.
If your doors are not insulated and the metal is simply visible, we can supply springs 207/2/22
207 – means bar size
2 is the internal diameter
22 is the length of the spring in inches
If you have a 16/7 door – vinyl back, which again you can determine by the label on the back side of the section (CHI, Ammar, Clopay, Doorlink, ASAP companies, if we see one of these labels, then we use the springs described below.). Then for these doors we can use the following springs 218/2.26.
218 – means bar size
2 is the internal diameter
26 is the length of the spring in inches
If you have an insulated door, the thickness of the section is 2 inches on both sides, then we can clearly use springs 243/2 34. Also, don’t forget to look at the label on the side of the door. (CHI, Ammar, Clopay, Doorlink, ASAP companies) if we see one of these labels, then we use the springs described below.
243 – means bar size
2 is the internal diameter
34 is the length of the spring in inches
If you have a wooden door and the door thickness is 1 3/4 AND 1 3/8 – you can install springs
250/2/32, they will normally work out the correct balance for these types of wooden doors.
250 – means bar size
2 is the internal diameter
32 is the length of the spring in inches
If you have wooden doors about 2 inches thick, then you can use the following springs 262/2/36. After installing such springs, you need to check the balance on your door; maybe, if necessary, you need to tighten a couple of turns or make fewer turns.
If you have a single door for 1 car and your labels match, you can use the same springs but only one in either direction.
Be careful if you have a door with windows; our examples do not fit here, and our example also does not fit if you have a door 8 inches high. If you have doors of this nature, you need to reconsider the size of the springs.

Replacing garage door springs.
Basically garage doors for 2 cars include 2 springs, each spring has a coin which comes in red and black. Red is the left side, black is the right side. Before replacing springs, make sure you are prepared and have the correct tools. A 7/16 wrench or socket also prepare a special spray for lubricating garage doors. Winding bars are also something you should prepare. Before replacing the springs, you can watch the video instructions from our company on YouTube.
Take the ladder, take the Winding bars, secure the stick in the spring and unscrew the bolts, after which the spring will begin to unravel and you will use the Winding bars to release it. To burst the spring, you do not need to use a Winding bars, but simply release 2 bolts from the spring, after which you can release the fastening on the drums on both sides and pull the shaft in one direction or the other. This shaft should come out of the barring plates and you can remove the old spring one by one, you can also remove the red old one and then put in the red new spring, after that you can remove the black old one and then put in the black new spring. After replacing the springs, do not forget to tighten the springs with 2 bolts and nuts. After this we can stretch the cable over the drum and onto both drums and install the plier. If you have a 16/7 door then we put 29 turns on the spring. 1 turn is 1 upward movement until the next grip. You should wind both springs 29 turns.
After installing any springs, you should check the balance of the doors. If your door is difficult to lift manually and does not stop in the central gap, then you need to tighten one turn per spring. And also if the door pops up and is difficult to close, you should remove one turn from each spring.
After replacing the springs, it is necessary to lubricate the important elements of the garage door. For this we can use special sprays.
